Activity 7.1.1 Measuring Practice
Introduction
The importance of accurate and precise measurements in architecture cannot be overstated.
Often, even small errors in room measurements could mean the difference between having
enough supplies to finish carpeting a floor or painting a wall.
In this activity you will practice measuring items and recording using architectural notation. You
will convert your measurements to decimal feet and then calculate the area of the rooms.
Procedure
1. Divide the inches and fractional inches located in Table A below by 12. Place the decimal
conversion value into the corresponding column. Round to the thousandths place X. XXX.
2. Estimate the measurement of each item in Table B. Then measure the items to the
designated precision, using a tape measure, yard stick, or ruler. Record the measurement
using architectural notation (e. g., 7-1"). Then convert the measurement to its decimal
equivalent (e. g., 7.083 in.).
3. Complete the conclusion questions.
