02.03 Early Cells
Summary
All living things are made up of cells. Some are single-celled organisms, while others are multi-celled organisms in which the cells have specialized structures and functions. There are two main types of cells: eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Both cell types are enclosed by plasma membranes, are filled with cytoplasm, contain ribosomes, and have DNA. However, these two types of cells have many differences such as the presence of a true nucleus and other specialized organelles in a eukaryotic cell that are not found in a prokaryotic cell.
When you have completed this lesson, you should be able to:
describe the cell theory and the developments that led to the cell theory
differentiate between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells
describe the structure of the cell membrane
distinguish between active and passive transport
identify and describe the phenomenon in an investigation
