This molecule is a saturated fatty acid. The cell membrane is made up of a phosphate head and three fatty acid tails that form a lipid bilayer arrangement.

This lipid bilayer regulates the entry and exit of substances into and out of the cell. Small non-polar molecules, like oxygen and carbon dioxide, are soluble in the lipid bilayer and can easily cross the plasma membrane.
