Voyaging populations of hunter-gatherer Native Americans visited the Channel Islands and found tar balls on the beaches from the natural oil supplies. The tar balls could be used as a waterproofing material for small huts. The visitors also caught an abundance of fish and sheep and found several edible plants. Within 5 years, the Native American population exploded; they inhabited every island in the archipelago.
