Catalase is an enzyme that is found in living tissues that helps speed the spontaneous decomposition of the substrate, hydrogen peroxide, H202, into water and oxygen, as hydrogen peroxide, a toxic metabolic byproduct, is produced. In my
experiment, I derive catalase from a potato.
H202 + catalase - catalase + H2O + O2
My results were as follows:
Tubes
1: water + mashed potato
2: mashed potato + hydrogen
peroxide
3: mashed potato + sucrose
Reaction (indicated by bubble column height in mm)
0 mm

Omm
Why are bubbles being produced in the tube? What exactly are the bubbles?
