ACID RAIN When sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are
released into the atmosphere, they react with water, oxygen,
and other substances to form mild solutions of sulfuric and
nitric acid called acid rain. The solutions can be spread
across the atmosphere over hundreds of miles. When acid
rain reaches Earth, it flows across the surface in runoff
water, enters water systems, and sinks into the soil.
5. Which of the following is NOT an effect of acid rain?
A. essential nutrients that are needed by organisms are eliminated from soil
B. aluminum released into the soil increases the trees ability to take in water
C. plants are less able to withstand cold temperatures, insects, and disease
D. increased toxicity of the water that is used by aquatic animals and organisms.
