Acorn weevils have a long proboscis (nose) which they use to penetrate the hard coating of acorns (large seeds of oak trees). A researcher studying a population of weevils finds that there is a large amount of variation in proboscis length among adult weevils. Studies of similar species of seed-eating insects have demonstrated that individuals with proboscises that are able to penetrate seeds quickly and deeply grow larger and have more offspring than individuals less able to penetrate seeds. What additional information does the researcher MOST need to determine in order to predict whether longer proboscis length will evolve in this population of acorn weevils
