Why is homeostasis important to the survival of an organism

It helps an organism maintain balance within a certain environment. For example, a person shivering when its cold helps generate heat in the body.

It helps keep the organism stable in their environment. Sweating to cool down. Shivering to generate heat. So on and so forth.

Mitochondria produce atp, a high energy compound. atp is used for all sorts of enzyme-mediated reactions, such as making proteins/nucleotides/etc, certain compounds cross the cell membrane, muscles move, etc.  without this source of energy, a cell will die. it will not be able to repair itself, defend against pathogens, etc.
