Why are herbivores and carnivores and omnivores and decomposers called consumers ?

They are called consumers because they cannot make their own food, so they have to consume (or eat) to gain nutrients.

Explanation:

Herbivores are considered consumers because they eat plants, they consume them. Carnivores will eat other animals, and omnivores eat both meat and plants. Decomposers will consume dead things or decaying matter. They are all consumers because they eat off of something. A producer makes it's own food, as in for example, a plant is a producer, and not a consumer.
