Passive immunity is the transfer of antibodies between two individuals. It is usually common with pregnant and breast feeding mothers. The baby gets the immunity from the breastmilk or in the womb through the placenta.

Immunity in newborn babies is temporary and decreases after the first few weeks or months.

Babies who are breastfed have passive immunity for longer.

Passive immunity happens after a person or organism receives elements of the immunity system, commonly antibodies, from another person.

It might happen in an artificially way, or in a natural way. The last one represents the case of lactant babies that gets antibodies from their mother through the placenta or the maternal milk.  

Natural immunity is the first defense line and is highly efficient. It impedes most of the infections, or annulate them.

The antibodies that the mother transfer to her child disappear when the baby is between 6 and 12 months old.
