Plants have the ability to produce their own food by trapping energy from the sun. Plants get 100% of energy from the sun and this energy is pass on to the primary, secondary, tertiary and the quaternary consumers as they feed on the plants and other animals that have fed on the plants. For the primary consumers, that feed directly on plants, they are only able to get about 10% of the energy from plants. The secondary consumers that feed on primary consumers will get about 10% of the energy in the primary consumers and this continues up to the quaternary consumers, by this time, it is only about 1% of the energy from the sun that will get to these last consumers.
