Photosynthesis. We know several things about this process. First, it is driven by light, usually sunlight. It is
preformed by autotrophs in an ecosystem, and we usually think of plants in this regard. Now think of Earth as a
closed system to energy. Sunlight reaches both sides of the lake in this picture but under different circumstances.
On the left, there are dark clouds and rain, water in the atmosphere. On the right, it is sunny with cumulous
clouds that are not rain clouds or dark.
Compare and contrast the rate of photosynthesis in the two areas. Give a reason for your answer based on the
scenario.
A-Clouds, regardless of the type, provide a method of natural insulation,
Therefore the transfer of heat energy on both sides of the lake is impacted
and the rate of photosynthesis should be the same.
B-Although there are darker clouds on the left, there is more available water
due to the precipitation. The rate of photosynthesis on the left will be
greater than that on the right where there is no rain.
C-Photosynthesis and radiant energy transfer are affected by natural
insulation such as clouds. The area on the left has more greater natural
insulation and we would expect a lower rate of photosynthesis.
D-Photosynthesis and radiant energy transfer are constant throughout the
daylight hours on Earth. Although there is cloud cover on the left, the
presence of water in the atmosphere counteracts its effects, creating a
warmer environment.
