War may be a very disruptive human activity.  During 15 years of war, the wildlife in Mozambique was hunted for food, and sold as trophies to fund the war.  Lions were hunted for sport, or died out after their food sources disappeared.

Biodiversity recovery takes time, however. As communities are reestablished, and lion species reintroduced, the increases in varied species act as food sources for lions to prey upon, lion populations would catch up recovering from unrestricted hunting and habitat loss.
