Beadle and Tatum caused a Neorospora collision with x-rays, and then watched for mutants that shows another form of nutritional needs from the wild-type models.

These Mutants had difficulty in feeding but can strive where there is a complete growth medium

This brought them to the conclusion that their genes may have been mutated and transformed to control its own metabolism.

Wild type Neurospora can strive where there is minimal medium of agar, inorganic salts, glucose, and the vitamin biotin. Beadle and Tatum did a series of experiments which involves placing the different forms of mutants into vials which have the minimal medium and a single growth nutrient.

The nutrient that promotes growth showed the enzymes that were still functional and none functional ones.

Thus brought them to the conclusion that genes act by influencing the formation of a specific enzyme.
