It is very easy to confuse the ability to respond to the environment or stimuli and the ability to move purposefully. Response to the environment would mean being able to adapt oneself according to the environment. Being able to move would not be called a necessity for being alive. For example: Streptococci, a bacteria displays all the characteristics of life. But, it will stay at the same position unless moved externally. The response given by Streptococci towards the environment as its stimuli is to perish or to adapt the environment for its survival. Hence, proving that the ability to move is not a characteristic of life.
