Fredrick Griffith was a British scientist who was intrigued with bacteria and wanted to study them closely. He wanted to know how certain types of bacteria were capable of producing diseases in lungs, mainly pneumonia.

In his experiment, Griffith used four mice as his test subjects and injected each with a different type of bacteria. He used the combination of heat killed, disease-causing bacteria and a live, harmless bacteria to inject in one of the mice, as a result, the mice died when they were injected separately. He then used the mix of disease-causing bacteria, harmless bacteria and a heat-killed, disease-causing bacteria to inject in the mice. The mice died. But at the end of the experiment, he injected a mice with a heat-killed, disease-causing bacteria and live, harmless bacteria together to see that the mice survived. Hence, forming his hypothesis.
