1. The sex of a child is determined at the moment of fertilization. There are usually two types of sex chromosome, the X and Y chromosome. The male has XY chromosome, that is each sperm carries either an X chromosome or a Y chromosome while the female has XX chromosome, that is each ovum (egg) carries an X chromosome.

2. It's only one of the chromosome is released for fertilization. If the X type sperm unites with the ovum (which has only X chromosomes), then the genotype of the resultant child is XX which is a female but if a Y type sperm unites with the ovum, the result is an XY genotype which is a male.
