Two different sets of genes control embryonic development in drosophila: maternal-effect genes and zygotic genes. products of the maternal-effect genes (mrna and/or proteins) are distributed in a gradient throughout the egg and regulate the expression of the first three groups of zygotic genes (gap, pair-rule, and segment polarity genes).
