The heat transferred to the ice increases the thermal energy of the molecules of water. why does this cause a change in state?

I'm assuming the question is asking why heat causes ice to melt. If so, it is because when heat is involved, the water molecules move faster, breaking the hydrogen bonds holding them all together, no longer holding the crystal lattice structure that is ice.
