Explanation:

A mature river has many tributaries draining into it, therefore the drainage volume is higher than that of any new river.  

While a young river having more gradient than the normal has few tributaries. It flows with a speed that causes degradation of the channel.

While an old river has some tributaries as it is mostly  flowing through the flood plains with high level of erosion.
