Mary lay in bed and watched the constellations move on the ceiling over her head. her parents had brought her a star projector that projected them there. the stars moved in a circle across the ceiling, so her view was always changing. is this what happens in real life?

1. The North Star, or Polaris, is the brightest star in the constellation Ursa Minor, the little bear (also known as the Little Dipper). As viewed by observers in the Northern Hemisphere, Polaris occupies a special place. The point in the night sky where the projection of the earth's axis lies is known as the North Celestial Pole (NCP). As the earth rotates on its axis (once every 24 hours), the stars in the northern sky appear to revolve around the NCP. Polaris lies roughly one half degree from the NCP, so this particular star appears to remain stationary hour after hour and night after night.                     2.

relative dating involves things like higher layers are most recent than rocks lower in the sequence. this can be extended to the known sequence of fossils. rocks containing rabbit fossils are later than those containing dinosaur fossils.  

absolute dating methods mainly use radioactive elements that have known rates of decay and produce recognizable products. for example potassium 40 decays to produce argon. once a rock has solidified the argon is trapped. by measuring the argon and potassium0 you can get an accurate number for the age.  

some other methods are good for archaeological ages. dendrochronology involves recognizing the sequence of tree rings. the orientation of magnetized particles in baked clay can be used to date a fire.
