Apical dominance occurs when the shoot tip inhibits the growth of the lateral bud so that the plant grows in an upward direction.This is important for the plant so that it can grow in the direction of sunlight to get more energy for the process of photosynthesis.This process can occur because the shoot tip has the apical bud. The apical bud produces a hormone called as auxin, which is responsible for inhibiting the growth of lateral buds.It is observed that if the apical bud is removed then the concentration of auxin lowers down and thus, the lateral buds can now grow and loose their dormancy.

Thus, the shoot tips effect of keeping the lateral buds dormant is called as apical dominance.
