When bacterial cells are placed in a nutrient rich medium containing all the nutrients required for the growth of the bacteria, the bacteria exhibit a typical growth curve. Initially on transferring into the medium, the population of bacteria remain the same for a short period called the lag phase. They increase in size and prepare the cells for cell division exhibiting active metabolism. The bacteria then enters the log phase, showing an increase in the number of bacteria in a logarithmic fashion by binary fission.
