Explain the difference between cohesion and adhesion as they apply to water, as well as the results that they produce.

Cohesive forces are responsible for surface tension, the tendency of a liquid’s surface to resist rupture when placed under tension or stress. Water molecules at the surface (at the water-air interface) will form hydrogen bonds with their neighbors, just like water molecules deeper within the liquid. However, because they are exposed to air on one side, they will have fewer neighboring water molecules to bond with, and will form stronger bonds with the neighbors they do have. Surface tension causes water to form spherical droplets and allows it to support small objects, like a scrap of paper or a needle, if they are placed carefully on its surface.

                                                                   while water likes to stick to itself, but under certain circumstances, it actually prefers to stick to other types of molecules. Adhesion is the attraction of molecules of one kind for molecules of a different kind, and it can be quite strong for water, especially with other molecules bearing positive or negative charges.

For instance, adhesion enables water to “climb” upwards through thin glass tubes (called capillary tubes) placed in a beaker of water. This upward motion against gravity, known as capillary action, depends on the attraction between water molecules and the glass walls of the tube (adhesion), as well as on interactions between water molecules (cohesion).

Even though Adhesion and Cohesion sound pretty much the same and they work with the same "tool": the attraction force; the fact is that they bring attraction over different stuff. ADHESION is in charge to bring attraction shared between many DIFFERENT molecules while COHESION is the FORCE of attraction bringing all the molecules that belong to the SAME type of matter altogether.

As it was mentioned before ADHESION is the attraction force being share between different molecules. you can think about it as a force that joins different forms of matter. COHESION, by the other side, is the force of attraction holding all molecules of the same type of matter altogether.  

The properties of water are perfect to explain these forces because of  the way water is compound. It is liquid and made up of many molecules that are all hold up together. water is made out of two main atoms (hydrogen and oxygen). Also, water carries two different charges a positive and a negative one. You will be surprised to see how water is not spilled out from a glass full of water before adding two or three more drops of water to it. This is because water molecules just pull together towards each other. This is when adhesion sets in .

ADHESION and COHESION have different strengths. in the example above, the cohesion force of the water molecules is stronger than any other adhesion forces surrounding the top of the glass of water; then its individual molecules will stick toward each other RESULTING TO CLUMPING. In other conditions, for example, a different type of matter or a different surface the cohesion force of the water molecules could be stronger, then the water will get spilled
