UNIT 2 ACTIVITY 1 Creating Checklists for a Childcare Center Step 1: Brainstorm For this step, you will begin by coming up with ideas to put into your checklist that best suits the purpose. You can either write these ideas on a piece of paper or on a document on your computer. Keep these lists separated by document. Each checklist must include at least 12 items. To get you started, here are a few ideas for each checklist, and resources you might want to consult for more ideas: Safety and Sanitation Checklist Must include: At least one item that aids in preventing fires (including one bullet point that walks the checklist user through using a fire extinguisher correctly) At least one item that aids in preventing accidents At least one procedure to help prevent an indoor emergency Other sample items: Disinfect door handles Lock all exterior doors when leaving Resources for research: The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website Your state’s health department website Playground and Outdoor Safety Must include: At least one procedure to help prevent an outdoor emergency Sample items: Check for sharp objects in the play area Make sure swings are tightly secured Resources for research: Organizations like Peaceful Playgrounds or Safe Kids National Safety Council Your ideas do not have to be highly organized at this point, aside from being separated into the correct lists. Save this document of your ideas to upload at the end of this activity.

Step 2: Narrow Down Your Ideas Now you’re going to organize your ideas a bit more. For each checklist, narrow down what you think to be the 8 most important ideas. They do not have to be in order of importance. Begin making your final checklist by creating a separate document for this final draft.

Step 3: Formatting Your Checklists Each checklist should ontain at least 8 separate items. To the left of each item on the documents, you must create a place to “check off” to show what item has been completed (e. g. cleaned the floors, etc.) or what has yet to be done. Under each item or idea, you must designate when each item needs to be done for the week. For example, if you think the floors must be cleaned every day, write “Each Day” underneath and bold it. If you think the floors must be cleaned three times a week, you can write Monday, Wednesday, Friday in bold underneath. Designate a time for each item and make sure it is written in bold.
