Navigation of our complex social world is facilitated by shared social expectations that influence behavior. For example, when we go to the movies we wait in line to purchase tickets and turn off our cell phones to comply with social expectations.

Of course, we can also find ourselves in an unfortunate situation in which someone in our environment is violating social expectations. For example, we may be sitting in front of someone speaking very loudly during the movie.

Observed conflicts between bonobos were coded in terms of severity (mild vs. severe), and whether the aggression was expected (e.g., competition for a resource neither animal possessed, play-related aggression) or unexpected (e.g., random unprovoked aggression, forced removal of the victim's possession).

Analysis of victim vocalizations revealed that screams in response to socially expected vs. unexpected conflict were associated with significantly different acoustic and temporal patterns. In contrast, although individual acoustic parameters were modulated by conflict severity, overall acoustic structure was not reliably different in response to mild vs. severe conflict.
