The history of improvisational theater can be traced back to the Atellan farce of Africa 391 BC but it became more prominent in the sixteenth century in Italy. However, it is often debated that improvised acts were made popular by Viola Spolin during the theater games in 1940. The theater games were actually rehearsal-room activities that went on to become a full-fledged form of acting that then became a source of entertainment. Viola Spolin, considered to be the “Grandmother of American Entertainment” went on to start Compass Players in Chicago, Illinois. They are known to be the first generation of improvisational theater. Later, in the 1970s, British playwright and director Keith Johnstone published the book Impro: Improvisation and the Theatre. Here, he wrote about his views on improvisation. Today, television shows such as Whose Line Is It Anyway? thrive on improvisational comedy.

In the American television show Community, there is a scene where Abed Nadir (played by actor Danny Pudi) is having a discussion with his class over actor Nicolas Cage. When he rises to start the topic on Nicolas Cage, he suddenly mimics him by speaking in the typical style of Nicolas Cage. Everyone in the class is surprised on seeing this because it was not mentioned in the script and Pudi decided to do it spontaneously.
