The website Wikimedia Commons allows people to share their photography with the world. For this lab, you will use Wikimedia Commons to find some of the principles of photography you have been learning applied in the world of photography. Photographers with varying levels of skill can post there, so some images will look very professional, while amateurs will clearly have taken others. Find five examples of photographs that meet at least five of the techniques listed below. You might find more than one of the techniques in the same photograph, which is fine, but you need to discuss five photographs and a minimum of five of the principles of photography. For each photo you provide, write one or two sentences explaining why you chose it and how it illustrates the principle(s) of photography listed. Using a simple background Rule of thirds Framing Using lines Filling the frame New perspectives Active space Keeping things straight Decisive moment Knowing the principles of photography also helps develop your critical eye, so after you have found good examples, look for one additional photograph that doesn’t work well because it fails to follow the “rules” of photography. Explain why the photo is not effective in a few sentences.
