Functions of egyptian, greek, roman, byzantine, romanesque, gothic?

Egyptian art was always first and foremost functional. No matter how beautifully a statue may have been crafted, its purpose was to serve as a home for a spirit or a god. An amulet would have been designed to be attractive but aesthetic beauty was not the driving force in its creation, protection was.

In the medieval world, art came to play a major role in society. The first consistent style was called Romanesque, which was at its peak between 1050 and 1200. Romanesque churches used art, largely painting and sculpture, to communicate important things.

Gothic sculpture was closely tied to architecture, since it was used primarily to decorate the exteriors of cathedrals and other religious buildings. The earliest Gothic sculptures were stone figures of saints and the Holy Family used to decorate the doorways, or portals, of cathedrals in France and elsewhere.
