Vincent van Gogh, Is one of the most well-known post-impressionist artists if not one of the most famous artist of at least the 19 century, for whom color was his main expression, born in Holland on March 30, 1853. Van Gogh’s series of Sunflower paintings are among his most famous. All twelve were painted between 1887 through 1889. Vincent painted five large canvases with sunflowers in a vase, these being the most famous, with three shades of yellow, In this way, he showed that it was and is possible to create an image with numerous variations of a single color, without any loss of eloquence.

Van Gogh’s sunflower paintings had a special place in his heart, hanging  two in the room of his friend, a fellow painter by the name of Paul Gauguin, who came to live with him for a while in the Yellow House. Gauguin fell in love with the sunflowers, which he thought were ‘completely Vincent’. Van Gogh painted several new versions during his friend’s stay and Gauguin asked for one as a gift, which Vincent was reluctant to give him. He later produced two loose copies, however, one of which is now in the Van Gogh Museum.
