The policy in which powerful and large countries try to extend their authority over other countries is known as imperialism. Its aim is to create an empire. It can be done by using military force or by simply establishing political and economic control over the other country.

The imperialist country gains the natural resources such as mining and agricultural  products. The conquered people are forced into  low paid work and slavery. The conquered people can also be forced for military service.  

Imperialism has been practised throughout the history but the 18th and mid 20th century is called Age of Imperialism. During this period modern and industrialised nations competed for control of resource rich territories around the world.

Latin America was also colonised by Spain, Portugal and France but after three centuries of rule most of the Latin america slipped out colonial rule between 1808 to 1826.
