What motivated japanese, italian, and german expansionism?

Extreme nationalism--With extreme nation building, these countries believed they could become superior through expansion. 

The nationalism of their countries led each of the leaders to believe as well as the people in the superiority of their nation. To protect the superiority and demonstrate the power of their people, expansion was necessary.
