At the beginning of the 1850s, despite sectional friction, no one thought the United States would be engaged in a civil war between the North and the South by the end of the decade. What events in the 1850s made southern secession and civil war more likely? Which may have constituted a “tipping point” after which secession and war were difficult, if not impossible, to avoid?
