WORTH 80 POINTS! AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY
1. In West Africa, European traders exchange firearms, cloth, salt, and other goods for enslaved Africans. Slave traders capture these people during battles with other peoples. West Africans use and sell European goods at their own local markets.
2 In the West Indies, European traders exchange enslaved Africans for cash crops, such as sugar and rum. The West Indies has abundant fertile soil to support sugarcane, rice, indigo, and cotton fields, but European plantation owners need cheap labor to work the fields. Having already enslaved and killed much of the native population, they turn to enslaved African workers. Local traders sell enslaved persons to plantations owners to farm their crops.
3 In Europe, European traders exchange cash crops and rum from the West Indies for manufactured goods, such as guns and cloth. European artisans use local and imported resources to produce goods to trade locally and to export. European merchants sell West Indian goods to consumers and factories, which turn raw materials into manufactured goods like cloth.
